The current, eleventh Mindrolling Trichen, His Holiness Trichen Jurme Kunzang Wangyal Rinpoche (also known as Trichen Dorje Chang) succeeded HH Penor Rinpoche as the titular head of the Nyingma school of Himalayan Buddhism in 2003. He is widely revered as a Mahasiddha and is considered to be an emanation of Padmasambhava. He is associated with secret dream yoga.

Rinpoche was born in 1930, on the eighteenth day of the first lunar month of the Tibetan iron sheep year in Lumo-ra, Kham.  His parents were his predecessor the tenth Mindrolling Trichen, Jurme Dondrub Wangyal and Yum Dawa Drolma (his mother).

He was blessed with instruction and empowerments from among the most celebrated lamas of his time.  HH Dzongsar Khyentse Chökyi Lodro (his root teacher), Sechen Kongtrul the great, Minling Chung Rinpoche, Minling Khen Rinpoche, Sechen Rabjam Rinpoche, Dordzin Namdrol Gyatso, Dordzin Dechen Choedzin and Gelong Kunzangla are just some of the extraordinary masters with whom he studied. Under the continued guidance of HH Dzongsar Khyentse Chökyi Lodro spent more than 14 years in retreats. He composed many teachings and discovered the terma of Jigten Wangchuk Pema Garwang, the Great Compassionate One. He fell in love and married.

After his father the 10th Mindrolling Trichen died, Rinpoche assumed the duties of the Mindrolling Trichen. His role was frustrated by the consequences of the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1959. His Holiness Mindrolling Trichen escaped first to Bhutan and then to India at the age of 29. He met and lived with His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche, a close friend of his father’s.  He closely collaborated with H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche, H.H. the 16th Karmapa and H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche amongst others to secure a future for Tibetan Buddhism in India.  He was formally enthroned as the eleventh Mindrolling Trichen by His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche and His Holiness Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche at the Zangdok Palri Monastery in Kalimpong. It was here his daughter, Khandro Tsering Paldrön (Ven. Khandro Rinpoche), was born in1967.

In 1976 HH Mindrolling Trichen Rinpoche  moved with his family to Dehradun in Uttaranchal, in northern India to oversee the building of a new Mindrolling mother monastery in exile where he and his family are still based.
